This ancient work demonstrates how much emphasis and creativity were placed upon appearance by the pre-Tokugawa warrior class. Warriors chose to be very ornately dressed and this was reflected in their personal weapons and accountrements as well. Warriors didn't want to blend in with the environment - they wanted to stand out and be recognized for their deeds and become distinquished for valor in battle. The warrior in death, still wanted to look good less he embarrass his house for many future generations.
Like everywhere else in the world, by demonstrating ornate clothing and weapons the warrior could also demonstrate how wealthy and powerful his family position was to others. In making Japanese themes, the art is so intricate and infused with meanings that one could devote a lifetime of study to it very much like the study of Japanese swordsmanship.
